With its experienced, multidisciplinary Education sector team, Pillsbury proudly represents more than 150 colleges, universities and school systems, including Texas A&M University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, University of California, George Washington University, American University, and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Pillsbury provides public and private institutions with integrated financial, regulatory, and business law counsel. We advise and represent institutions in all aspects of their affairs, including regulatory, civil rights, intellectual property, litigation, tax and corporate transactions, technology licensing and transfer, employment, and land use issues.
We often advise colleges and universities on student financial assistance and other federal programs. We also have counseled on the ownership and regulation of noncommercial broadcast operations, and on immigration matters involving visiting scholars, exchange students and overseas campuses.
Our recent representative matters include:
- Helping Texas A&M settle a civil enforcement action under the federal Public Health Security & Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act that had temporarily closed four university research labs.
- In a landmark case raising novel issues under the False Claims Act, persuading the Ninth Circuit to affirm dismissal of a qui tam suit against a university client.
- Convincing a DC appeals court to halt the imposition of burdensome conditions that would have precluded construction of a multimillion-dollar business school.
- Assisting the Los Angeles Unified School District in interactions with vendors, utility companies and local officials to enable cost-saving solar energy instillations on school rooftops.
