Matt Grillo supports clients across various industries in protecting and enforcing their intellectual property rights and is entrusted to represent them in their most complex IP disputes in U.S. district courts and other prominent litigation forums. 

Matt possesses comprehensive experience across various stages of litigation, specializing in patent and trademark law, as well as Section 337 investigations at the International Trade Commission. He has handled both inter partes review and ex parte reexamination proceedings before the USPTO. Additionally, Matt has prosecuted patent applications and drafted Office Action responses. He also counsels clients on trademark and patentability issues, advising them through the legal and technical requirements needed to secure essential IP rights.

Prior to entering the legal field, Matt worked as a software developer at a fintech company. He possesses extensive knowledge of software functionality, including areas such as AI, machine learning, blockchain technology and search engine optimization, among others.

  • Regularly supports ADT Inc. in U.S. district courts nationwide, specializing in robust defense against multifaceted patent infringement allegations.
  • Drafted pre-trial motions and participated in the trial for Stanley Black & Decker regarding alleged patent infringement. Certain Electronic Stud Finders, Metal Detectors, and Electrical Scanners (Inv. No. 337-TA-1221). Also aided in representing Stanley Black & Decker as intervenors during the appeal of a U.S. International Trade Commission decision. Zircon Corp. v. International Trade Commission (Fed. Cir. 2024).

  • Spearheaded the drafting of multiple inter partes review petitions on behalf of PLR Worldwide Sales Ltd., with respect to various mobile application and video game technology patents.

  • Collaborated in defending against trademark infringement accusations and in lodging counterclaims in a legal action initiated by a competing entity.
  • Engaged in prosecuting patent applications for software and mechanical technologies at the USPTO, specifically focusing on machine learning innovations for a diverse client portfolio, including Mastercard, Fellowes Brands and several others. Additionally, prosecuted trademark applications, ensuring robust protection of branding for clients across various markets.

  • Provided support for the defense of Bass Pro Shops in relation to allegations of trademark infringement. Elite Detailed Cleaning Inc. v. Bass Pro, LLC (N.D. Cal. 2022).
  • Represented respondents Razer regarding alleged patent infringement concerning electronic eyewear technology. Certain Electronic Eyewear Products and Components Thereof (Inv. No. 337-TA-1383).
