SAN FRANCISCO—Pillsbury today announced the appointment of Marcia Pope as the firm’s General Counsel, effective January 1, 2015. Pope succeeds Ron Van Buskirk, who will take the position of General Counsel Emeritus.

“Marcia is going to be an extraordinary General Counsel for the firm. She has tremendous relevant experience and stature within the firm, including familiarity handling litigation, claims and insurance matters,” said Pillsbury Chair James Rishwain. “Marcia has high standards to meet in succeeding Ron, who has given exemplary service and has been a pioneer among law firm general counsel.”

Van Buskirk has been the firm’s head of risk management since the 1990s and has served as General Counsel for more than 15 years, having just marked his 40th anniversary at the firm. In that time, he has overseen the development of a successful and proactive risk management program and has been involved in many initiatives outside the firm, including as an early supporter and member of the Law Firm General Counsel Roundtable.

Pope joined Pillsbury in 1986 and has served in many important positions, including as long-time employment and claims counsel to the firm, a member of Pillsbury’s Board and a member of both the Professional Responsibility and Claims committees.
