In recognition of Pillsbury's long-standing commitment to providing legal services pro bono to those in need, San Francisco litigation partner Sarah G. Flanagan received the Robert G. Sproul Award from the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area on January 24 at their 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon.

The award acknowledges Flanagan's many years of support to the Lawyers' Committee and her tireless pro bono service advocating for the legal rights of its clients—people of color, the underprivileged, immigrants and refugees.

Flanagan’s commitment to pro bono goes back to her first years at Pillsbury in the early 1980s, where, as a junior associate, she and then Pillsbury partner (and later Magistrate Judge) Bernard Zimmerman were the lead lawyers prosecuting a successful class action on behalf of prisoners challenging the unconstitutionality of their confinement in administrative segregation at four California prisoners.

At Pillsbury, much of Flanagan’s pro bono work has been devoted to support of the Lawyers’ Committee and mentoring associates to join her in providing legal services to vulnerable communities.

At the annual Lawyers' Committee's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon, San Francisco's legal community pays tribute to outstanding individuals who help meet the legal needs of disadvantaged communities. The Robert G. Sproul Award is presented to an exemplary law firm partner who has provided outstanding legal representation for under-represented communities and has marshaled the resources of her firm to defend the rights of the disenfranchised.
