Stephen D. Byers

Mr. Byers practices intellectual property law with a focus on electrical, mechanical, and business method patents including patent prosecution, licensing, client counseling, non infringement and invalidity opinion work, and litigation support including appellate experience.
Mr. Byers' patent prosecution, licensing and client counseling experience involve a variety of fields including optical disc drives, differential pressure indicators, Internet and networking applications, medical devices, semiconductor testing apparatuses, and mobile DVD players. He has also prepared numerous patent clearance, non infringement and invalidity opinions involving networking applications, software design, printer cartridges, and Internet business methods. His litigation support work includes studying patents and technical disclosures, as well as writing briefs and motions, propounding and answering discovery requests, and performing statutory and case analysis.
While at UCLA School of Law, Mr. Byers prepared several independent projects ranging from analysis of the Festo II decision and the legal ethics of patent prosecution, to an examination of the outcry against Internet business method patents.
Mr. Byers is also a frequent guest lecturer at UCLA School of Law on the topic of patent law’s influence on innovation and the Internet.Federal Circuit, Central District of California; Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
