Mr. Utz is an associate in Pillsbury's real estate group. Mr. Utz’s practice concentrates on land use, zoning, historic preservation, municipal law, land development, and urban renewal in the District of Columbia. He currently represents clients in the development of mixed-use, office, retail, institutional, and residential projects. He commonly represents clients before authorities including the D.C. Zoning Commission, the D.C. Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA), the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), the National Capitol Planning Commission (NCPC), and the D.C. City Council. Mr. Utz has been actively involved in litigation related to zoning and historic preservation issues. In addition, Mr. Utz advises clients on a variety of transactional matters, including acquisitions and dispositions, public private partnerships, and the purchase and sale of bonus development rights (such as transferable development rights and combined lot development rights).
In 2007, Mr. Utz received two awards in recognition of his work in the real estate industry. Mr. Utz was recognized as one of the top 35 real estate professionals in Washington, D.C. under 35 by Bisnow on Real Estate and as one of seven “Top Guns” (a category for younger attorneys) in the legal industry in Washington, D.C. by the Washington Business Journal.
Mr. Utz is also active in the community. He is on the Auxiliary Board of the Jubilee Support Alliance and is involved with Pathway Homes of Fairfax, Virginia.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Utz worked for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) Consulting and Systems Integration. In that position, Mr. Utz handled a variety of technology matters primarily involving website and custom software development. Mr. Utz’s clients included an investment bank, a forestry and paper products company, and government agencies.
