Washington, DC—Michael L. Sibarium has joined Pillsbury's Washington, DC office as a partner in the firm's Litigation practice. Sibarium represents clients in significant antitrust and competition matters before federal and state enforcement agencies such as the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general. His practice focuses on government investigations and litigation involving mergers, acquisitions and other potentially anticompetitive conduct, as well as on private antitrust and related litigation before courts throughout the country.
"We are excited to have Michael join Pillsbury, where his extensive insights enhance our platform and expand considerably our ability to advise on complex antitrust and related litigation matters," said Pillsbury partner Jim Rishwain. "He is a strong addition to our DC office, where Pillsbury is well positioned to continue serving clients in an evolving economy where government is playing a larger role in private enterprise."
"Michael's depth of experience in antitrust merger review and litigation, including his FTC experience, make him a perfect fit for our corporate clients engaged in significant merger and acquisition transactions," added Roxane A. Polidora, the head of Pillsbury's Antitrust & Competition practice team. "His impressive litigation experience adds depth and strength to our growing antitrust litigation bench."
Formerly a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP, Sibarium's broad experience includes many of today's growth industries, such as health care, life sciences, energy, financial services and technology, as well as a wide range of traditional manufacturing, wholesale and retail business. By combining antitrust merger, litigation and agency experience with his knowledge of the premerger reporting requirements of the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act, Sibarium efficiently guides clients through all phases of the merger-review process – from the structuring of proposed transactions through defending them in court. Where necessary, he coordinates the activities of competition counsel across the globe.
In addition to his merger practice, Sibarium has represented clients in a wide range of other civil and criminal antitrust investigations, as well as many FTC investigations into unfair and deceptive trade practices involving advertising and marketing.
He has tried cases against both the Antitrust Division and the FTC, and has represented clients in private litigation involving claims such as price fixing, tying, boycotts, monopolization, unfair competition, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of contract, trade libel, deceptive trade practices and other business torts.
Prior to joining Winston, Sibarium served as an Attorney Advisor to a Federal Trade Commissioner. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, summa cum laude, Sibarium received his J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University School of Law, where he was a member of The George Washington Journal of International Law and Economics. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
Pillsbury's Antitrust & Competition Litigation team represents clients in some of the most significant antitrust, unfair competition and trade regulation litigation. The team is distinguished by its experience with the complexities of antitrust litigation—and by its track record in securing favorable resolutions through successful litigation, negotiated settlements and jury trials. Its strengths include the efficient management of multi-district class action litigation and parallel criminal antitrust investigations. Pillsbury attorneys also have significant experience handling antitrust proceedings involving the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and US Attorneys' Offices, regularly appearing in federal district courts, federal circuit courts of appeal and state courts across the country, and advocating before federal and state regulatory agencies and states attorneys general.
