Peter Doocy of Fox News reports that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has been issuing “national security letters” to internet service providers (ISPs) that demand information about users’ locations, contacts and searches and that specify the ISP is barred from telling users about the request. The FBI can request this information about users without a search warrant or evidence of a crime, Doocy says.

While some, like former CIA director James Woolsey, predict Americans may be more tolerant of such government oversight given the current national security climate and recent terrorist attacks around the world, Global Security Services partner Brian Finch suggests the practice may present another security concern.

“It may be a problem that, if the FBI is sweeping in all this information, they may just be providing a pool of information that foreign governments can actually sweep up and use to actually conduct further espionage,” Finch told Fox.
