Recent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau claims against payment processors in a recent debt collection case drew the ire of critics who compare the action to the Justice Department’s Operation Choke Point. According to Litigation partner Christine A. Scheuneman, the case has also drawn attention because of the CFPB’s inclusion of the telemarketing firm, Global Connect LLC, highlighting the extensive reach the bureau has when it comes to debt collections and bringing enforcement actions for practices it deems to be unfair.

“This is certainly something that everyone should pay attention to if they’re part of the debt collection business,” Scheuneman said. “The progression seems to be that any company that’s involved in the activity that the CFPB is concerned about, and in some instances has warned about, is susceptible to an action.” Click here to read the full article.
