Pillsbury Energy partner Jeffrey Merrifield has been retained by the ClearPath Foundation, a not-for-profit dedicated to accelerating conservative clean energy solutions. In his capacity as legal adviser to ClearPath’s advisory board, Merrifield will help the organization to encourage adoption of advanced nuclear energy technologies and address some of the many regulatory burdens associated with it.

Founded by conservative businessman Jay Faison, ClearPath works with policymakers and industry to encourage clean energy innovation and usage. Its mission is to encourage the use of nuclear, hydro, clean coal, and natural gas power, thereby strengthening the economy, increasing energy security and reducing pollution. Merrifield’s practice focuses on energy regulatory issues, particularly in connection with the nuclear sector and advanced reactor technology. As a former Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (1998-2007), he championed the NRC’s efforts to risk-inform regulations and prepare the agency for potential new power reactor applications. He also served as acting NRC Chairman during the August 2003 blackout when nine nuclear reactors underwent emergency shutdowns, as well as during an emergency event that led to the first evacuation of an NRC–licensed site since Three Mile Island. Merrifield currently serves as the Chairman of the Advanced Reactor Task Force of the Nuclear Infrastructure Council.
