Medtronic Inc. won its infringement battle with an Oklahoma cardiologist Tuesday.

The Federal Circuit stopped the doctor’s appeal of Patent Trial and Appeal Board rulings that his aortic heart valve replacement device was invalid. Dr. Troy Norred’s U.S. Patent was found to be unpatentable because it was anticipated by prior art.

Norred sued Medtronic alleging the company copied the patented technology, which he described as a life-saving surgical device that can be implanted in cardiac patients to help regulate blood flow in the heart. PTAB found a number of important claims to be unpatentable, and the Federal Circuit agreed.

Medtronic is represented by Intellectual Property partners Jack Barufka and Evan Finkel.
