George Borovas Comments on Japan Nuclear Energy Phaseout

As mentioned in: Bloomberg News, Financial Times, City A.M., Power Engineering International
September 16, 2012

George Borovas, a partner in the Pillsbury’s energy group in London and the leader of the firm’s international nuclear energy team, was quoted in several publications on Japan’s announcement that it will scrap nuclear power by the end of the 2030s.

According to Borovas, “Japan has significant nuclear power plant fleets and must recognize that replacing such nuclear power plants with other energy sources may have a significant impact on the environment, as well as their own short-term and long-term economic and national security.” He added that “Countries such as Japan, with established nuclear power programs, should study and determine the short-term and long-term implications of a nuclear phase-out. Such a decision should not be made lightly.”

Likewise, while the companies that develop these technologies are active internationally, should “they stop building plants and developing their technology in Japan,” Borovas said, “it might challenge their international competitiveness in the long term.”
