Global Security partner Brian Finch recently appeared on Fox Business channel’s “Firewall” to discuss the U.S. government’s response to cyberattacks perpetrated by nation-states and suggested the government needs to take a more proactive approach in communicating that it won’t tolerate attacks.

“There needs to be a diplomatic element to this,” he said. “Obama needs to … say ‘Look, there’s a difference between state-level espionage that we all conduct … and raiding our industrial intellectual property and mapping our systems to gain economic advantages and to scuttle deals.”

Finch also said Congress and the White House must be more vocal about the potential consequences for criminals and nations that perpetrate cyberattacks on the U.S.

“The point is simply that you have to disrupt,” he said. “We can’t allow nation-states to pick the time, place and methodology of an attack. If we do that, it doesn’t matter how much we invest in defenses, we’re going to lose at some point.”
