Wall Street Journal's "Corruption Currents" blog cited a client alert authored by Pillsbury's Raymond Sweigart, a London-based litigation partner, that claimed there won't be many changes before the law becomes effective in April 2011.

"Recent reports of a wholesale reconsideration of the new U.K. Bribery Act 2010 appear to be at best wishful thinking and in all likelihood much ado about nothing," said Sweigart.

Sweigart added that it is important for companies to be aware of the act's provisions, especially the extraterritoriality and corporate offense sections, and that laws already on the books covered many of the offenses in the Bribery Act, which simplified the legal code.

"In the end, most observers believe it highly unlikely that substantial changes to the Bribery Act will be made at this late date," Sweigart said, and that as the date of its going into effect gets closer, "one should probably not grasp at straws suggesting a further delay in implementation."
