Meet The Video Game Lawyers

As mentioned in:
September 26, 2011

In a discussion of legal issues as they pertain to video games and virtual worlds, this FastCompany article mentions Pillsbury’s Virtual Worlds & Video Games practice, and one of the lawyers focusing extensively on these issues.

One of the hot legal issues today are virtual currencies, according to James G. Gatto, the head of Pillsbury’s Virtual Worlds & Video Games Team. Gatto says that a host of overlapping local, state, and national regulations all surround the trade of virtual currencies online.

Also, laws surrounding "freemium" games – those that are downloaded for free, but require subscription fees and payment for optional add-ons – and cloud-based games are becoming important issues to video game developers, says Gatto. “There are tremendous issues surrounding cloud-based gaming; the business model used for most of these games is a freemium one that has copyright and intellectual property issues” surrounding it, he explains.

In addition, Gatto notes that gamification law is likely to be an important topic over the next year.
