Eager suitors are already knocking on the door a week after Mexico began allowing private electricity generators to request permission to participate in a future wholesale market. Many companies, domestic and foreign, could potentially participate in the upcoming wholesale electricity market. This new market will allow private generators to compete on the basis of price for the first time, potentially leading to a drastic reduction in electricity prices.

"This is part of [President] Pena Nieto's continuing argument for the energy reform," said John McNeece, senior counsel for Pillsbury. "Pena Nieto sold the energy reform based on the lower prices that would be created."

Details on the rules explaining the new market weren't released until February, The market itself will include both a day-ahead market, which will provide most of the information on power supply and demand, and a real-time market, which will mostly be used for final price settlements, said Finance partner Michael Hindus.
