WesPay this week announced that Deborah S. Thoren-Peden, a Corporate & Securities partner in Pillsbury’s Los Angeles office, is the recipient of the Frank E. Zima Award for Payments Advocacy.

Thoren-Peden has served as an Advisor on the WesPay Board of Directors since 2010 and participates on the NACHA Council for Electronic Billing and Payment and the ATMIA Debit Council. She has participated in NACHA working groups and is a member of the National Retail Association, the Direct Marketing Association and the California Retailers Association.

Thoren-Peden is the leader of Pillsbury’s Payment team, as well as the Consumer & Retail Industry team, the Unclaimed Property team and the Privacy, Data Security & Information Use team. Her practice focuses on banking, electronic commerce, electronic payments, privacy, anti-money laundering, Office of Foreign Asset Control regulations and unclaimed property. She represents and advises bank and non-bank financial institutions, money transmitters, high-technology, Internet, telecommunications and insurance companies.

WesPay is a membership-based payments association that focuses on rules and regulatory compliance, risk management and operational best practices across payments channels for its member financial institutions, third-party payments providers and other payments-services organizations. The association presented the Frank E. Zima award, along with other industry leadership awards, at its 2014 Payments Symposium, September 15-16 in Anaheim, California.

According to the association, the Frank E. Zima Payments Advocacy Award is named after the late Wells Fargo and Western Payments Alliance executive who, during the course of a 30-year career in the electronic payments industry, effectively advocated for a number of initiatives that had a significant impact on U.S. electronic payment processes and specifically resulted in the more open, inclusive rule-making process that all ACH network participants benefit from today.
