The Fox Business channel’s show “Risk & Reward” recently interviewed Global Security partner Brian Finch about ever-increasing cybersecurity threats. Host Deirdre Bolton asked Finch what kind of liability a company might face for a breach propagated through third-party applications and not the company’s own servers, as was reportedly the case with the recent Dropbox breach.

“From a legal perspective, it’s going to be very complicated,” he said. “You’re going to have to determine whether allowing these third-party applications or third-party mechanisms to somehow gain access into their systems was contemplated as they were building their applications or building their cloud-server technologies.”

Finch also spoke about the need for more deterrents to prevent hackers from stealing data, since they aren’t currently faced with real threats of prosecution or penalties.

“Where’s the discussion about going after these criminals proactively? We’re not hearing a lot of that,” he said. “If all we’re doing is saying ‘Put more bars on your windows, put more locks on your doors in order to protect yourself,’ that’s not very comforting.”
