California law permits its courts to suspend the licenses of drivers who don’t pay traffic tickets, but Pillsbury and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argue that policy is adversely affecting millions of people.

The ACLU of Northern California filed suit against Solano County Superior Court this week, claiming the law disproportionately harms the poor. And though the state developed a repayment program last year to protect low-income Californians, the ACLU says it doesn’t take into account a person’s ability to pay.

Working with the organization on the lawsuit is Litigation partner Thomas Loran, counsel Andrew Bluth and attorney Darcy Muilenberg. Last year, a Pillsbury team worked with the ACLU to call for a change to several California counties’ policies of requiring citizens to pay traffic citations before being permitted to contest those citations in court.
