Dr. Gu is a patent agent in Pillsbury's Intellectual Property practice. He is not an attorney. Dr. Gu assists clients in all stages of patent prosecution before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including due diligence, drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, and appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. Dr. Gu also provides support to reexaminations and opinions.

Dr. Gu has extensive technical experience on semiconductor, nanotechnology, materials science, physics, physical chemistry, MEMS, microfluidics, renewable energy, solar cells, lithography, DNA sequencing, biochips and biomaterials.

Prior to joining Pillsbury, Dr. Gu was a patent agent in the Intellectual Property Section of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, P.C., where he prosecuted a large portfolio of patent applications for a client in the semiconductor industry.  Before that, Dr. Gu worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara, on a renewable energy project funded by the Department of Defense and on a joint research program with a major US defense contractor.  Dr. Gu also counseled a research subsidiary of a major Japanese conglomerate on their business strategy and technology research in renewable energy.  Dr. Gu’s doctoral research at Harvard University focused on nanomaterials and nanoelectronics, including electronic devices based on single organic molecules and single oxide nanowires.

In his spare time, Dr. Gu is a potter, plays racquetball and enjoys photography and gardening.
