Rob Pérez advises technology clients from startups to government research agencies to multinational corporations on strategies for obtaining patents and for navigating the landscape of competitors' patents.

Rob has been involved in advising inventors and their employers on protecting their innovations for over 20 years. In that time, Rob has had experience in a wide range of technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing, nuclear power plant cleaning and fueling, measuring and testing, materials science, aerospace, hydrocarbon exploration and production, and consumer and professional optical and optoelectronic devices. Rob has been involved in all phases of the patent process, from preparation and prosecution, to various types of post-grant procedures including reissue, reexamination, interference, and IPR practice, as well as litigation in district court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and before the International Trade Commission.

Representative Experience

  • Lead counsel in a group of related inter partes reexamination proceedings before the Patent and Trial and Appeal Board relating to computer accessory technologies.
  • Seconded to semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier at which responsibilities included portfolio development for contamination and temperature control as well as counseling regarding potential infringement and litigation issues under U.S. law.
  • Worked with a medical device manufacturer to develop a patent strategy and obtain patents on various aspects of the technology in key countries, and participated in negotiations with potential investors.
