Sarah Flanagan is a partner in the law firm's Litigation practice and is located in the San Francisco office. She has served as primary counsel in jury and court trials, appellate proceedings, arbitrations, mediations, agency proceedings and internal and government investigations. Ms. Flanagan has served as counsel for joint defense groups and liaison counsel for defendant groups in a variety of contexts. She has focused her practice in the education, health care, commercial and environmental areas.
Ms. Flanagan has handled varied claims in the education, health care, commercial and environmental areas including alleged discrimination and retaliation, unfair business practices, breach of privacy, environmental compliance and cost recovery, trade secrets, breach of fiduciary duty, tortious interference, defamation and risk of loss. She has significant experience with class actions, including such actions alleging privacy breaches, challenging bank fees as unfair business practices and alleging price-fixing conduct and unfair competition in various product markets. She has defended a university and its hospitals in contract disputes and a variety of student, employee and faculty claims, as well as in healthcare privacy breach cases and environmental citizen suits. She has successfully mediated numerous consumer class actions, employment disputes and environmental cost recovery actions and has settled a variety of other business disputes.
Ms. Flanagan was elected to Pillsbury's managing boards for the 2006-2009, 1995-1996 and 1993-1994 terms. She served as Managing Partner - Professional Resources and Practice (1995-1996). She was Co-Leader of the firmwide Litigation Section from 2001 through 2003, and was the Leader of the San Francisco Litigation Section from 1998 through 2004. Ms. Flanagan has chaired Pillsbury's Education Team since 2005, and is also an active member of the Health Care and Privacy Teams
Professional and Community Activities
Ms. Flanagan is active in professional activities and has held numerous leadership positions. She is on the Mediation Panel of the Northern District of California. She chaired the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel for the Northern District of California in 2010. She served as President of the Board of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (Northern California) in 2010, after serving on that Board and holding other leadership positions for the preceding ten years. She was Co-Chair of the Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representatives for the Northern District of California in 2008-2009. She also has been active in community affairs, serving on numerous boards and working on pro bono cases through Pillsbury. Ms. Flanagan was a member of the Board of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area from 2005 - 2013.
