In collaboration with the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP), Wesley Spowhn, a senior associate in Pillsbury’s litigation practice in San Francisco, recently came to the aid of a vulnerable person. Spowhn volunteered to represent the client through VLSP’s Medical-Legal Collaborative, which provides legal services to low-income patients at St. Mary’s Sister Philippa Health Center.

Responding to a placement request from the project’s Supervising Attorney, Marie Appel, Spowhn agreed to take on the case approximately one week before trial. The client, who was incorrectly cited for possessing an open container of alcohol in public, suffers from disabilities including memory and concentration issues, hepatitis, diabetes, depression and anxiety. Avoiding a conviction and fines she could not afford, Spowhn got the citation dismissed in court.

In addition to Spowhn, the effort was spearheaded by San Francisco partner Thomas Loran, who is the head of Pillsbury’s pro bono practice and associates Caitlin Bloom, Jessica Bogo, Matthew Hallinan, Peter Richmond and Ada Wall.
