HOUSTON—Pillsbury today announced the addition of Hugh Ray III, whose practice focuses on complex reorganization, bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Ray joins the firm’s Houston office as a partner in the perennially and highly ranked Insolvency & Restructuring practice.

Ray represents businesses and creditors across various industries, and his appointment in one of the world’s premier energy markets underscores Pillsbury’s continued emphasis on the volatile oil and gas sector and its dedication to addressing the legal needs of distressed companies.

We are delighted to welcome Hugh to the firm. His exceptional work on all sides of complex bankruptcy matters is well-known, and he will significantly enhance our service offering for distressed companies in the energy sector and beyond. We look forward to developing our restructuring practice to serve private equity and hedge funds in distress, and Hugh’s diverse skills are a perfect fit for this platform.

In addition to counseling publicly traded companies through the reorganization process, Ray advises major creditors in their collection efforts from complex bankruptcies and has served as lead trial counsel in several high-profile and bet-the-company disputes. His clients have included Armada Water Assets, HII Technologies, Lon Morris College, Golden Oil Co. and creditor committees in chapter 11 cases related to Sneed Shipbuilding, Dune Energy, Chuza Oil Company and Deep Marine Holdings.

“Hugh’s arrival illustrates Pillsbury’s commitment to growing our presence in Texas and to broadening the reach of our service strengths for companies in distress,” said partner Jim Rishwain. “His reputation in Houston and nationally is second-to-none, and we are very pleased to have him.”

Ray, a frequent author and speaker around various topics in bankruptcy and transactional law, has been elected to the American Law Institute as a member consulting on several notable projects, including the Transnational Insolvency Project and the Law of American Indians. Additionally, he is board-certified in business bankruptcy law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

“Pillsbury’s full-service platform and longstanding focus on the energy sector will be of tremendous benefit to my clients,” Ray said. “I am eager to collaborate with my new colleagues to capitalize on the firm’s recent momentum in Texas and build on the already outstanding profile of its national Insolvency & Restructuring team.”
