TVfreedom.org, a new broadcast industry coalition of coalition of 23 members, including the National Association of Broadcasters, the affiliate groups of CBS, Fox and NBC, will focus mainly on issues surrounding retransmission consent negotiations.

Scott Flick, a communications partner in Pillsbury’s Washington D.C. office, argued that having a coalition is important to providing a more balanced debate and a counterbalance to multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs).

“There’s been an immense focus from the MVPD side complaining about the retransmission system and trying to make a major ruckus every time there is a dispute that involves a broadcaster,” he said. “The problem is that if something gets repeated enough, people start to think maybe it’s true. MVPDs have been sounding the trumpet non-stop.”
