Chris has extensive experience in the litigation of complex intellectual property disputes involving life sciences, software and electronics.

Chris has represented clients throughout the United States and the world in litigation at the trial and appellate court levels, in arbitration and in other alternative dispute resolution proceedings. His experience includes trade secret misappropriation under state and federal law, patent infringement cases, inter partes reviews, inventorship disputes, anti-trust claims, and other intellectual property issues.

Chris has represented some of the best-known brands around the world, including Amgen, Qualcomm, Oracle, Johnson & Johnson, Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly Facebook) and Samsung. In addition, he has successfully represented semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, software, health care and biotech companies.

Representative Experience

  • Represented complainants, Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Company of Korea, in an ITC matter to stop the importation of illegal, gray-market service and repair parts using the Hyundai trademarks in which the ITC issued a Limited Exclusion Order, Cease and Desist Orders, and a Consent Order against four automotive parts dealers, including the U.S. dealer, the middleman and the suppliers. (Certain Replacement Automotive Service and Collision Parts and Components Thereof, Inv. No. 337-TA-1160).
  • Evolutionary Intelligence v. Facebook (N.D. California) Represented Facebook at the district court and on appeal to the Federal Circuit regarding patents claiming the use of containerized data structures.
  • Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronics (N.D. California) Represented Samsung in this seminal case involving trademark, trade dress, utility and design patents covering various aspects of the iPhone and iPad.

  • Amgen v. Johnson & Johnson (AAA Arbitration) Represented Amgen in a dispute with Johnson & Johnson over the ownership rights to a second generation red blood cell stimulating protein developed by Amgen scientists.
  • Verizon v. Cablevision (ITC) Represented Cablevision with respect to utility patents related to cable television set-top box hardware and software.
  • Personalized Media Communications v. Motorola (E.D. Texas) Represented Motorola in its dispute with PMC over PMC patents related to television signal transmission and reception.
  • 3M v. Tredegar Corp. (D. Minn)(Fed. Cir.) Represented Tredegar after it was sued by 3M alleging infringement of 3M patents involving elastomeric laminates.
  • DiscLink v. Oracle Corp. (E.D. Texas) Represented Oracle in its dispute with DiscLink over the use of compact disk technology.
  • ePlus v. SAP (E.D. Virginia) Represented SAP against claims that certain of its core offerings infringed patents related to basic internet functionality.
  • Qualcomm v. Skyworks Solutions (S.D. Cal) Represented Qualcomm in this litigation involving claims of trade secret theft and patent infringement by Skyworks Solutions.
  • Affymax v. Johnson & Johnson (AAA arbitration) Represented Johnson & Johnson in an inventorship dispute over the discovery and development of a peptide that binds to the human erythropoietin receptor discovered using phage display technology.
  • Amgen v. Johnson & Johnson (AAA arbitration) Represented Amgen is a series of disputes regarding the appropriate manner to market and allocate sales of the blockbuster drug EPO, sold by Amgen as Epogen and Johnson & Johnson as Procrit.
  • Amgen v. Transkaryotic Therapies (D. Mass) Represented Amgen in its allegations of patent infringement regarding EPO production in mammalian cells.

Professional Highlights

Chris has frequently guest lectured on litigating intellectual property disputes at law schools in and around the Bay Area, including the University of California at Berkeley (where he did his undergraduate work and played on three national championship rugby teams) and Stanford.
