California’s decades-old moratorium on new nuclear power plants—originally intended as a temporary measure while awaiting a federal waste solution—has effectively halted nuclear development across the state, leaving Diablo Canyon as its only operating reactor.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Environmental & Natural Resources partner Amanda Halter highlighted that internal Democratic Party politics could slow any policy shifts, particularly as influential left-leaning groups like the Sierra Club maintain opposition to nuclear power.
“Those politics play into it hugely, because those are very important local constituencies. They’re very important constituencies in terms of the politics of simply getting out of committee in California,” she explained. “Those groups are incredible at organizing, and they are influential with legislators.”
As the nuclear renaissance gains momentum across the U.S., Halter also observed that many environmental and climate-focused organizations are becoming increasingly open to nuclear power.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if some of those groups that have historically been anti-nuclear change their tune,” she said.
