The Hon. Matthew McGuire, former Executive Director of the World Bank under President Obama; Strategic Advisor to Impact Investors

Matthew McGuire is a Democratic strategist and strategic advisor to investment funds and firms focused on impact investing in developed and emerging markets. He was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2015 to serve as the U.S. Executive Director of the World Bank where he represented the United States as the largest shareholder on the executive boards of the World Bank Group institutions. In his role, McGuire helped approve more than $60 billion annually of the Bank’s loans and investments, and he worked closely with leaders of the National Security Council, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of the Treasury in carrying out the U.S. agenda at the Bank. Before leading the World Bank, McGuire served as Director of the Office of the Business Liaison at the U.S. Department of Commerce where he managed the Secretary’s relationships with business leaders globally.

Prior to entering government, McGuire spent nearly a decade working as a senior executive in the financial services industry, raising capital for three top-tier firms in Chicago, Ill. He has also run nonprofit programs in the U.S. and abroad, focusing on workforce development and affordable housing. McGuire earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University, a BA from Brown University, and a Certificate of Religious Studies from the University of London.
