Pillsbury’s leading Japan Corporate practice has received numerous top-10 and top-20 rankings by renowned organizations such as Refinitiv, Bloomberg, FactSet and more. Most notably, the practice recently received top rankings in mergers and acquisitions by both FactSet (#7) and Refinitiv (#9) for deal count so far in 2022. Additionally, the practice closed 2021 with a ranking of #11 for the total number of M&A deals by FactSet.

Chambers, a prestigious legal research and analysis company, has also been consistent in recognizing Pillsbury’s Japan practice over the years. For instance, the firm’s Projects & Energy practice in Japan was top ranked in the Chambers global editions for 2021 and 2022. Pillsbury lawyers were also acknowledged by ChambersAsia-Pacific for work in areas such as Projects & Energy, Banking & Finance and Corporate/M&A.

Pillsbury’s Japan practice originated in the 1930s and is one of the oldest by a U.S. law firm. The lawyers in the firm’s Japan practice are located around the world, including in Japan, China, the United Kingdom and the U.S. The team’s lawyers and staff are fluent in English and Japanese, both in language and culture.

“It’s exhilarating to be recognized for our long-standing commitment to our Japanese outbound clients,” said Pillsbury’s Japan practice co-leader Fusae Nara. “I could not be more proud of our global team of practitioners focusing on Japan for these many years.”

The practice’s momentum continued in 2021 with the arrival in Tokyo of Corporate partner Jeff Schrepfer, an M&A lawyer in Japan with significant experience in the energy sector. Coming to Pillsbury from Morrison & Foerster after more than two decades in practice, Schrepfer represents publicly and privately held Japanese companies on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and provides counsel on their general corporate matters.

“Our practice sets high standards and achieves big goals,” Schrepfer said. “As such, our group deserves every bit of recognition that it has earned in recent years and I am proud to be a part of such an impressive team of lawyers from around the globe.”
