Pillsbury Tax partner Jeffery Yablon has been selected by the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association as the 2017 recipient of its prestigious Vanguard Award. This is the Committee’s highest honor, presented in recognition of a leading legal practitioner’s lifetime achievement in the nonprofit field.

In choosing Yablon as this year’s Vanguard honoree, the ABA Nonprofit Organizations Committee noted his numerous successful representations of tax exempt organizations of all political and cultural views. Career highlights include the landmark “Big Mama Rag” case—which held unconstitutional a Treasury regulation used by IRS agents to deny charitable status to an organization because it was founded by and operated for gay women—as well as his leading role in a three-year battle to obtain formal IRS recognition of tax-exempt status for Crossroads GPS, a high-profile conservative organization at the center of the “IRS Targeting Scandal.”

Yablon is based in the firm’s Washington, DC office and advises on tax issues for all types of tax-exempt organizations, including public charities, private foundations, lobbying organizations, trade associations, labor unions, chambers of commerce and political organizations. He also provides tax advice to for-profit organizations and has structured tax-deferred, like-kind exchanges of real estate and other assets totaling more than $2 billion. He is the author of As Certain as Death: Quotations About Taxes, a collection of tax quotes now in its 10th edition.
