Drawing on decades of experience in policy and regulation, Merrifield discusses the NRC’s evolution, the importance of a more risk-informed regulatory approach and the potential effect of recent changes on advanced reactor deployment.
The conversation also covered emerging regulatory pathways for fusion energy, nuclear power and propulsion in space, used fuel and recycling, and the market for reactors of varying sizes and designs. Merrifield also outlined an opportunity to expand U.S. nuclear generation while rebuilding domestic capabilities across the nuclear fuel cycle.
