Jeffrey Merrifield, the leader of Pillsbury’s global Energy section and a two-term presidential appointee to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, appeared on Bloomberg’s Daybreak EU podcast, which has recently been covering the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with hosts Caroline Hepker and Lizzy Burden.

The episode suggests that Ukraine’s nuclear sites have become a focal point of Russia’s invasion.

“Frankly, they are important targets because the nuclear generators in Ukraine provide about 50 percent of the power in the country,” Merrifield told Hepker and Burden. “So, the extent that Putin’s aim is to take over and dominate the country by having access and being able to control these plants is going to be an important means of achieving that. If they have that control, they are able to turn the power on and off as part of that strategy to wear down the Ukraine government and people.”
