Keen on building its first big offshore wind farm, Portugal has been waiting for the final legal framework for one of Lisbon’s auction sites off the coast of the Atlantic, according to an article by the Financial Times.

In the race to net zero, governments are eager to speed up renewable energy development. However, in an effort to manage energy markets and protect communities and environments, alliances such as the European Union are bringing in more regulation.

The article notes that legal challenges on renewable projects can cause uncertainty, added costs and significant delays. Thus, the involvement of lawyers at the start of these projects is fundamental.

Energy partner Gavin Watson told Financial Times that law firms today are “too siloed” and should be more entrepreneurial in handling the energy transition. Lawyers, he said, should take “a blank sheet of paper [and say] ‘how do we make this happen?’”
