Partner Jeffrey Merrifield, Energy Section Leader and former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Commissioner, will be a panelist on “Realizing Innovation in Advanced Reactors” during the NRC’s annual Regulatory Information Conference (RIC). Jeff will speak about the industry’s advanced reactor activities as it pertains to the session topic. As interest in licensing a new generation of advanced reactors continues to increase, the NRC is pursuing regulatory changes to support the safe licensing of advanced reactors. This session will elicit and explore innovative strategies to address the unique aspects of advanced reactors. This will be a facilitated session engaging various leaders on the challenges to be addressed for enabling innovation for advanced reactors.

The RIC offers participants an inviting atmosphere that promotes open dialogue to share valuable information about emerging issues in the regulation of nuclear power plants and nuclear safety research, as well as in the areas of security and the nuclear fuel cycle. The RIC is a dynamic forum where domestic and international industry leaders can exchange ideas and experiences on matters related to nuclear safety and regulation.
Through informative technical sessions and stimulating panel discussions, the RIC technical program will underscore the agency's readiness to face new challenges and will include sessions on topics such as advanced reactors, risk-informed decision-making, accident tolerant fuels, fuel cycle issues, the regulatory impact of advances in digital technology, and regulatory research.
