NEW YORK—Pillsbury today announced the addition of noted financial products and derivatives lawyer Daniel Budofsky as partner, continuing a year of expansion and diversification for the firm’s Finance practice and New York office. Budofsky comes to Pillsbury from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

A recognized authority on securities laws and financial regulation—particularly in connection with Dodd-Frank and the Volcker Rule—Budofsky’s practice focuses on advising clients in transactions that involve complex and emerging derivatives and other financial products. His work encompasses regulatory capital transactions, synthetic securitizations, equity derivatives, securities lending and repurchase transactions and other types of derivatives across all asset classes.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dan,” said Finance practice leader Jonathan Whitney. “Banks are facing enormous uncertainty about how derivatives markets will be regulated going forward. Without question, having Dan’s unique and innovative experience to support institutions’ diverse needs in this area will be of huge benefit to the firm and our clients.”

Beyond his work with financial institutions, Budofsky has collaborated with industry groups and regulators to define the fundamentals of the derivatives sector and to drive industry reform. He served as counsel to the Asset Management Group of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) in connection with derivatives reform and represented the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) during the drafting of the 2006 Fund Derivatives Definitions and the 2011 Equity Derivatives Definitions.

“Dan is a true authority on new and sophisticated derivatives products and transactions,” said partner Jim Rishwain. “His addition allows the firm to deepen our capital markets services in new ways, and we are very pleased to welcome him in New York.”

Budofsky is highly ranked by Chambers in the Capital Markets and Derivatives category and is a former chair of the New York State Bar Association Subcommittee on Derivatives. He was named “Lawyer of the Year” for Derivatives and Futures Law by Best Lawyers in 2015 and is a frequent writer and speaker on a wide range of topics involving derivatives.

“Pillsbury is known for its focus on the financial services industry, and the firm’s lawyers are highly reputed for their work in securities and capital markets law,” Budofsky said. “I look forward to joining this well-established practice and building on the firm’s existing services with a comprehensive derivatives offering.”
