The U.S. Securities and Exchange Com mission’s (SEC) practice of initiating administrative proceedings against defendants to be adjudicated by the SEC’s in-house administrative law judges (ALJs) has taken place since the 1940s. Presently, five ALJs oversee the SEC’s Administrative Law Court. All are appointed by the SEC’s Office of Administrative Judges.
