This week the U.S. Tax Court will begin its first-ever diversity-focused internship program, part of a nationwide effort to improve the pipeline to jobs in the legal field.

The internship is one of several steps the Tax Court has taken this year to improve diversity: It also launched a webinar series on diversity and inclusion, and called for diverse applicants to apply to an open special trial judge position.

Julie Divola, a Tax partner at Pillsbury and the incoming chair of the American Bar Association Tax Section, told Bloomberg that tax law can play a fundamental social justice role.

“Unless you make an effort to show what tax can be, then it becomes less interesting for a number of people,” she added.
