The recent selloff in public tech stocks may be causing some VC-backed tech companies to reconsider going public for the time being.
In an interview with the Venture Capital Journal, Pillsbury partner Steve Ryan, leader of the firm’s emerging companies and venture capital practice, said that whenever the tech market takes a hit, “that does have a downstream impact, at least in the short term, changing how people think about private companies and what the potential exit multiples could be.”
Even so, venture managers continue to see IPOs as a viable exit route. Ryan says he assumes that many fund managers have portfolio companies that are in the process of going public, even if they may have filed confidentially and are waiting for stronger market signs before listing.
“Folks are probably waiting to see some companies go out and perform well. It’s pretty risky to be the first one to try,” he says.
