Law360 recently asked legal veterans to weigh in on how firms can maximize their associates’ potential. One way to encourage associates to perform at their best and to keep morale high is to promote a sense of ownership in their work, Washington, DC-based Global Sourcing partner Aaron Oser says.

“We try to give associates control over aspects of deals,” he said. “Just seeing these associates after doing a deal by themselves—doing a little victory tour—is powerful.”

Oser also recommends involving associates in a diverse range of projects to keep them engaged in their work.

“If you have a strong, interesting portfolio of work, that solves a lot of concerns,” he said.

And collaborating with associates to evaluate their performance and set goals can also be helpful.

“We wanted to provide a heck of a lot more transparency,” Oser said. “It’s all about creating an environment that’s concerned about [the associates], giving them quality work, and making sure they get involved.”
