Despite the historic and steady increase in the size of nuclear reactors over the years, many industry observers suspect the next phase of nuclear energy will be much smaller than anticipated. In fact, companies pursuing the next generation of reactors are confident they can deliver less risky and less expensive plants by drawing from modular manufacturing techniques, according to the Financial Times (FT).

London-based Energy partner Vince Zabielski explains that countries that may not have the budget for large nuclear plants may favor building affordable small modular reactors or SMRs as “[there is] less demand for space and for cooling water.”

Additionally, he said these modular reactors require “smaller emergency planning zones compared to large traditional reactors, meaning there are far more suitable building sites for SMRs.”
