NEW YORK, May 23, 2018—Continuing a recent wave of high-profile lateral hires in support of clients around the globe, Pillsbury has recruited noted international arbitration practitioner Robert L. Sills to join its New York office as partner. Sills, who has more than four decades of experience litigating complex cross-border matters before arbitration tribunals and in state and federal courts, joins the firm from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.

“As businesses become more global in scope, international arbitration has likewise become an increasingly important avenue for clients seeking to resolve cross-border disputes,” said Pillsbury Chair David Dekker. “Bob has a long track record of achieving success for clients in this highly specialized area and the companies we represent will undoubtedly benefit from the substantive knowledge and experience he brings to the firm.”

Sills has extensive experience representing banking, energy, private equity and telecommunications clients in litigated and arbitrated matters. He represents parties in arbitrations around the world, held under the auspices of major arbitration agencies—including the International Chamber of Commerce, the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Center for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association and JAMS—as well as non-administered arbitrations conducted under UNCITRAL and other rules, and in transnational litigation in courts throughout the United States. He regularly advises on transactional issues related to the drafting and negotiation of arbitration provisions as well..

“Bob is a serious player in the field of international arbitration, with a solid practice and an outstanding reputation among peers,” said Litigation Practice Section Leader Debby Baum. “His arrival brings new skills and further depth to our growing arbitration group and we are incredibly excited to have him on board.”

In August 2017, Pillsbury added a three-lawyer team in London—led by highly regarded disputes partner Deborah Ruff—to lead the firm’s international arbitration practice and serve as a cornerstone of its ongoing expansion. With Sills’ arrival, the firm-wide group now includes nearly 20 lawyers.

“I’m very excited to play a part in the ongoing build-out of Pillsbury’s arbitration practice,” said Sills. “The recent investments the firm has made to enhance its international disputes capabilities, and the emphasis it puts on collegiality and collaboration, make Pillsbury an ideal platform for me and my practice.”

Pillsbury’s International Arbitration lawyers have the perspective and experience to resolve disputes before arbitral forums in proceedings throughout the world, and in related litigation. Practice members have appeared before arbitral tribunals for governments, investors, developers, equipment manufacturers, construction companies and others in venues in the Middle East, Europe, North America, South America and Asia.
