The Burton Awards has recognized Pillsbury attorneys Norman Carlin and Brendan Hennessey as among the finest law firm writers of 2017.

Carlin and Hennessey were chosen for their article entitled, “Adapting to Climate Adaptation: Implications and Opportunities for the Private Sector.” The article appeared in Bloomberg BNA on November 23, 2016.

The “Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Awards” will be formally announced on May 22 at the 18th annual Burton gala awards ceremony at the Library of Congress.

A partner and leader of the San Francisco office’s Environmental & Natural Resources practice, Carlin focuses on CEQA and NEPA review and permitting of energy, transportation and development projects. He represents clients in permit and rulemaking proceedings, administrative appeals and litigation. He also advises on proposed legislation and on compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations protecting water quality, wetlands and coastal and marine habitat, and on environmental issues in transactions.

As an associate in Pillsbury’s Environmental Practice in Washington, DC, Hennessey represents clients involved in civil and criminal litigation and counsels clients on environmental aspects of business transactions, including renewable energy and infrastructure projects. His experience includes advising on environmental risk management, compliance and disclosure, and state and federal enforcement under the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA and other environmental laws.

The Burton Awards is funded by the Burton Foundation, a nonprofit, academic effort devoted to recognizing and rewarding excellence in the legal profession. Nominations are submitted by law firms and include exemplary articles that have been published by their lawyers during the past year. Out of the 1,000 largest law firms in the United States, only 25 winners are selected each year.

The Burton Awards are run in association with the Library of Congress, as well as lead sponsor Law360 and the American Bar Association. This year, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will receive the “Book of the Year in Law Award” for her work, “My Own Words.”
