SAN DIEGO – For the second time in two years, the San Diego Business Journal has featured the progress of Sand Cloud, an innovative startup founded in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood.

In its previous report, the Business Journal noted that the emerging company went from thousands of dollars in revenues in 2014 to $5.8 million in 2017.

This time, the publication highlighted how Sand Cloud reimagined its business model, moving from producing beach towels that featured pillows to standard fabric towels bearing their popular mandala prints. The redesign helped them become an $8 million company in 2018. It also allowed the company to focus more closely on its mission of becoming more sustainable and offering more eco-friendly products, such as shirts made of recycled materials, reusable water bottles and metal straws.

Martin Bridges, a consultant to Sand Cloud and Pillsbury’s entrepreneur-in-residence, said the company’s decision to change direction was timely and crucial. The towel-pillow combinations, he said, “weren’t particularly well-received, except people loved the designs.” Plus, he added, “you can roll the towel up and put it in a backpack very easily.”
