A group of utility companies operating a nuclear power station in Kansas sued the U.S. Department of Energy, asking for the agency to fulfill its promise to remove spent radioactive fuel from their facility. Kansas Gas & Electric Co. and two other utility companies say they have collectively paid $224 million to remove spent nuclear fuel, but the fuel waste continues to sit idly at the facility, in some cases for 30 years or more.
