National Law Journal has released its annual Elite Trial Lawyers report, which recognizes the firms and lawyers that have achieved high-dollar recoveries through creative plaintiff-side trial work. The NLJ includes Pillsbury on its list of the 50 firms with the largest recoveries over the past 12 months. During the period covered by the rankings, Pillsbury trial teams secured two major insurance recovery verdicts for policyholder clients.

In August 2015, Pillsbury client Victaulic Company was awarded more than $55 million in a suit against three AIG companies that culminated in a six-week trial. The verdict included $9.3 million in compensation for breach of contract and bad faith and $46 million in punitive damages, making it the largest verdict in the Superior Court of California, Alameda County since 2006. National Law Journal named the Victaulic award No. 31 among the top 100 verdicts of the year. The client was represented by Insurance Recovery & Advisory partners Joseph Jean and Colin Kemp.

In November 2015, an Arkansas jury awarded Lion Co. $72 million in damages and lost income resulting from a breach in an oil pipeline located between Louisiana production fields and a Lion Oil refinery in 2012. The Pillsbury team representing Lion Oil included partner Peter Gillon and senior associate Vernon Thompson. The verdict was ranked No. 25 on NLJ’s top 100 verdicts of 2015.
