The Daily Journal named Silicon Valley-based, Pillsbury corporate and securities partners Allison Leopold Tilley and Jorge del Calvo as among California’s top private equity lawyers and emerging companies lawyers. For the first time, in recognition of the state’s strength in innovation, the journal honored individual lawyers in its annual review of the top ten California deals and IPOs of the previous year.

Commenting on their methodology, the journal’s editors noted that the lawyers on its list were “selected based on an exhaustive process” which included nominations from law firms and business and canvassing the paper’s reporters and their best sources. The selected lawyers “made their mark on the year.”

Leopold Tilley and del Calvo jointly represented information technology company Synnex Corp. in its $505 million purchase of IBM Corp.'s customer care outsourcing business, which includes 31,000 employees in more than 35 countries. The deal closed in September 2013.

Discussing the deal with the Daily Journal, del Calvo said, “The negotiations were exceedingly complex, involving labor, employee benefits and other laws of numerous countries.”

Del Calvo also represented Validity Sensors Inc. in its sale to Synaptics Inc. for $255 million in stock and cash and worked on several public offerings in 2013. Commenting on market trends, he said he expects the momentum in the IPO market will continue into 2014. “While the stock market, as a whole, has performed exceedingly well in 2013, the market for technology IPOs performed even better. This led to increased demand for IPOs.”

In addition to the Synnex deal, Leopold Tilley advised Mission West Properties Inc. on its $1.3 billion sale to DivcoWest and TPG Real Estate as well as Apigee Corp. on its acquisition of data analytics company InsightsOne Inc. in December 2013. She has also represented numerous startup companies in venture financings such as BlueStacks, Cavendish Kinetics Inc. and Moxtra Inc.

The journal noted, “For Tilley, digging deep to understand the technology and revenue models for startup companies is not only fun, but helps her better advise companies on deals.”
