LOS ANGELES — In one of the most prominent U.S. Supreme Court cases this year, a group of Pillsbury pro bono clients recently filed an amicus brief with the Court in Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole, No. 15-274.
The “friend-of-the-court” brief addressed the historical context of a 2013 Texas law that the state claims was enacted to protect the health of women using abortion clinics in Texas. Pillsbury represented 16 leading historians whose research focuses on the lives of women in the United States. Their brief provides historical perspective on laws purporting to protect women, highlighting that such laws have often had the effect of restricting women’s choices and constraining their liberty and equality.
Pillsbury partners Christine Scheuneman in Los Angeles and Kevin Fong in San Francisco led the Pillsbury pro bono team on the historians’ brief. Oral argument is scheduled for March 2, and a decision is expected from the Supreme Court this summer.
