In Voisine v. United States, currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, two Maine men with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions contend that the Court should exclude misdemeanor domestic violence convictions under a recklessness standard from the federal Gun Control Act’s restrictions barring individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from possessing guns.

On behalf of the Washington, DC-based Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project, Pillsbury lawyers Christine Scheuneman, Kevin Fong, Julia Judish, Jessica Bogo, Jennifer Seigle, Ryan Vanderford and James Chang drafted and filed an amicus brief arguing against the petitioners’ position and urged the Court to interpret the federal gun ban to keep guns out of the hands of convicted batterers, even where the conviction was obtained under a recklessness standard.
