The senseless and tragic killing of George Floyd—and the countless incidents of violence against Black Americans that preceded it—have rightfully resulted in widespread moral outrage and public protests. It has yet again raised important questions about the racial prejudice that continues to impact the daily lives of so many and what we can do to help combat it.

The responses we have received from members of the Pillsbury community who are moved by these events, concerned for the wellbeing of colleagues and inspired to act are heartening and give hope. There is much work to be done, and it will take all of our contributions to achieve meaningful change.

Lawyers and law firms have a special role to play in society, and at Pillsbury we take this responsibility seriously. Working with clients and community organizations, we are developing opportunities for all members of our Firm to be part of the solution through additional pro bono and other volunteer service focused on racial injustice and improving the criminal justice system. We remain committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels, combatting racism and discrimination wherever it exists.

While some of us may never feel the fear, pain and uncertainty of discrimination and intolerance that others experience, we have an opportunity to become stronger as a community by reflecting on recent events, connecting with others, listening to their experiences and working together for meaningful change. The ongoing dialog about these issues is vital.

Take care of each other,
Dave Dekker and Ed Perron
