In a recent analysis, Energy partner Vince Zabielski highlights the growing energy demands of generative AI as a key challenge driving renewed interest in nuclear power. The UK has committed substantial funding to nuclear projects, including the Sizewell C facility and small modular reactors (SMRs), which offer greater flexibility and faster deployment. Due to their compact size and potential to be co-located with data centers, SMRs are seen as a promising solution for powering energy-intensive AI infrastructure.
The article also stresses the urgent need to address the UK’s nuclear skills gap to ensure successful SMR deployment. Although a lead developer has been selected by the government, thousands of trained professionals will be required to operate and maintain these facilities. As such, with AI growth closely tied to energy infrastructure, Zabielski argues that the UK must invest in nuclear education and training at all levels to rebuild expertise and position itself as a leader in both clean energy and AI.
